In the mean time you can use a command like flatpak override -user -filesystem=~/.themes:ro to poke a hole in Geary's sandbox to support it until they do. If your theme is not available for Flatpak, we recommend filing a bug with your theme's developer asking them to publish it on Flathub.

If not, install it, and Geary (and other Flatpak apps) will be able to start using it. For example, Geary 3.34 will be using the GNOME 3.34 runtime, and hence the theme will also need to be available for 3.34. If you are using a custom GTK theme and it is not being applied to Geary, check that your theme has been installed via Flatpak (run flatpak list in a Terminal) and that it matches the current version of the GNOME runtime that Geary is using. Being an email application, Geary is likely to experience attacks from malicious parties, so Geary's Flatpak sandbox is quite stringent. If the theme is installed via some other means (for example, in /usr/share/themes, or ~/.themes) then Flatpak apps will not be able to access it because of the security provided by the Flatpak application sandbox. Typically, Flatpak applications only respect custom themes if the theme is also installed via Flatpak. Please see Flatpak's Desktop Integration documentation for technical information about integrating and configuring Flatpak apps to work with your desktop. We have a list of current known limitations that is being worked on, if you are experiencing an issue that is not listed there, please report it. The recommended way to install Geary is to install the Flatpak package from Flathub, however due to Flatpak being relatively new technology, there are a few limitations still. Instead of using Davmail, use Exchange's IMAP support instead - it is substantially better. Unless Davmail implements these extensions, it will continue to be unsupported. These extensions (such as IMAP IDLE and UIDPLUS) have been supported by most mail servers (including MS Exchange) since the late 2000's. Note that using Davmail to access mail on an Exchange server is not supported, since Davmail does not implement any modern IMAP extensions, several of which Geary requires. When configuring an Exchange account in GNOME Online Accounts, IMAP or SMTP configuration information will not be provided to Geary by Online Accounts, and hence an IMAP account will also need to be configured for Geary to be able to access mail for the account.
Thus if the IMAP connector is not enabled for your Exchange installation, please get in contact with your Exchange administrators and ask them to enable it. There are no plans to support Microsoft's proprietary mail access protocols going forward. These are enabled for and Office365, and hence Geary can connect to those services. To connect to a Microsoft Exchange server (, Office365, or local institution installations), the Exchange installation must have both its IMAP and SMTP "protocol connectors" enabled.

If 2-step verification is not enabled, you will need to allow access for “Less Secure Apps” If 2-step verification is enabled, you should create an App Password, and use that in your Geary account settings

The setting to update depends on whether you have 2-Step authentication enabled for your Google account: If you do not have GNOME Settings and GNOME Online Accounts installed or are running an old version of Geary (earlier than version 0.13), then you will need to create an account using a standard IMAP login and password, after enabling this in your Google account. If you are running an up-to-date version of Geary, simply add your GMail account using the Online Accounts panel of GNOME Settings, and no further action needs to be taken by you. Google requires email applications implement its proprietary protocol to sign in to GMail by default.
